Lower Antelope Canyon
There are two sites to visit in the area, the Lower Antelope Canyon and the Upper Antelope Canyon. So which one to choose?
Both visits can be done only by guided tour. But the duration is not the same. The Upper lasts 45 minutes while the Lower lasts 1h30. Also, the price is not the same, the Upper is more expensive than the Lower. But then why do many choose the Upper Antelope Canyon? Because the rocks are much narrower at the top while the Lower is a bit wider. I think both visits are worth it. But I admit that I preferred to choose the Lower Antelope Canyon for the quality / price ratio. If you want to do the Upper Antelope Canyon, it seems to me that you have to book well in advance. For the Lower Antelope Canyon, I booked 2 weeks in advance. They didn’t have much room left for the hours I wanted but I managed to get one. The best time to visit this place is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays hit the Canyon.
I visited the place in June 2022 and we still had to wear the masks during the whole visit. And they’re not kidding about it. If you remove it, even to take a photo, you are expelled from the site. And the guide told us that they expelled some every day. Knowing the price of the visit, it would be a shame not to do the whole route just for a mask. Each guide only had 10 people with them and the groups were spaced out, unlike pre-Covid where visitors waited hours outside the Canyon. I had a super good guide during my visit, and that is not insignificant, because I met other people who did not like the visit because of their guides. Do not hesitate to ask questions to the guide. Ours explained to us how they maintained the place, the daily life of the Navajo and their traditions. He even said a few sentences to us in their language and explained to us how they introduced themselves. He also took the time to explain how the Canyon was formed and all the changes there have been over the years. He gave photo tips and took the time to take photos of everyone alone. I think having a good guide helped a lot to have a good experience. But beyond that, it’s very impressive to be in the middle of these red / orange rocks for more than an hour. That’s wonderful ! There’s only one path the whole way and I’ve been pleasantly surprised each time. It’s gorgeous!
Price of the Lower Antelope Canyon guided tour: $66 / €63
